Safina just gets by qualifier Pin in Rogers Cup opening round
TORONTO -- Dinara Safina withstood Camille Pin's upset attempt, hanging on for a 7-6 (9), 3-6, 7-5 opening-round win over the qualifier that lasted nearly 2½ hours on a chilly, windy night.
"It was the same wind for her, so I think it was not an excuse, the wind. It was my head, my brain," Safina said. "I think the next match will be better."
Safina went up 4-1 in the first set, but had to struggle through 2 hours, 36 minutes of tennis in swirling winds near 20 mph.
