Top two seeds Williams, Golovin upset in first round
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Top seed and defending champion Venus Williams was upset in the opening round of the WTA's Cellular South Cup on Tuesday night by qualifier Petra Kvitova.
The 17-year-old Kvitova won only the second WTA Tour match of her career, stunning Williams, the winner of four Wimbledon titles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
"I am very happy," said Kvitova, of the Czech Republic. "It is the biggest [moment] of my life."
