ELMONT, N.Y. -- The Breeders' Cup Sprint lost a key contender when trainer Steve Standridge declared Mach Ride out of the race on Saturday morning.

Mach Ride, winner of the Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap this summer at Calder, suffered an abscessed foot shortly after his troubled fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Handicap on Sept. 30.

"His foot is still a little too tender to work him as scheduled on Sunday and he had to work if he was going to run in the Sprint" said Standridge. "He'll be fine in a week or two but it's not worth trying to push it and taking a chance of hurting this horse even if it is the Breeders' Cup."

Mach Ride was one of 15 horses pre-entered on Monday for the Sprint.
