No Cup for Misremembered
ARCADIA, Calif. -- Misremembered, the winner of two Grade 2 stakes for 3-year-olds this year, will skip the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 7 and be pointed to the $400,000 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs on Nov. 27, trainer Bob Baffert said on Saturday.
Baffert said that he would prefer to keep Misremembered in easier company this fall, and point the colt to the Strub Series at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting.
"He's a big, immature horse," Baffert said. "I want him for the Strub. I want a good horse for the Strub."
The Grade 2 Strub is run over 1 1/8 miles on the main track for 4-year-olds in early February, and is an important prep for the Santa Anita Handicap.
Misremembered worked six furlongs in 1:11.80 on Saturday, although Baffert timed him in 1:12. Owned by Baffert's wife, Jill, and George Jacobs, Misrembembered has won 4 of 7 starts and $554,760. By Candy Ride, Misremembered has won the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park and the Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park. In his only stakes appearance against older horses, he finished 10th in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar last month.
Blind Luck works for BC Juvenile Fillies
Blind Luck, the leading contender for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies on Nov. 6, worked six furlongs in 1:11.80 at Santa Anita on Saturday. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Blind Luck won the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes here over 1 1/16 miles on Oct. 4, the same course and distance as the BC Juvenile Fillies.
In the Breeders' Cup, Blind Luck will have to beat Beautician, the fifth-place finisher in the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 9. Trained by Kenneth McPeek, Beautician had her first work at Santa Anita on Saturday, going five furlongs in 59 seconds, the third fastest of 72 recorded works at the distance.
Beautician had a troubled trip in the Alicibiades, running in traffic through the stretch. "What could go wrong, went wrong," said McPeek, who was at Santa Anita on Saturday. "We can't dwell on it."
The two quickest five-furlong works of the day were recorded by Breeders' Cup hopefuls. Dave in Dixie, bound for the Juvenile, was timed in 58.40 seconds, the fastest of the morning. Sprint hopeful Fatal Bullet was timed in 58.80 seconds.
