Dangerous Midge upsets in BC Turf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Dangerous Midge and jockey Frankie Dettori pulled off an 8-1 upset Saturday in the $3 million Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs, overtaking front-running Champ Pegasus while the even-money favorite, Behkabad, followed in third the entire way. Dangerous Midge, a 4-year-old Lion Heart colt owned by Iraj Parvizi, returned $19 as fourth choice after completing the 1 1/2-mile distance in 2:29.40 over a firm course. He was second throughout on a relatively slow pace before overtaking Champ Pegasus, a 9-1 shot ridden by Joel Rosario, following a prolonged stretch drive. Behkabad was third and Winchester was fourth. Winning trainer Brian Meehan, based in England, won the BC Turf the last time it was run at Churchill, with Red Rocks in 2006. Workforce, the Epsom Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner and the 7-5 morning-line favorite, was an early scratch, leaving a field of seven. The connections of Workforce cited a turf course they believed to be too firm for the colt's liking. The $2 exacta (8-1) paid $172.60, the $1 trifecta (8-1-7) paid $261.90, and the $1 superfecta (8-1-7-2) paid $921.
