ETOBICOKE, Ontario -- Chicago shipper Cloudy's Knight ($8.90) became a contender for next month's Grade 1 Canadian International with a determined score in Sunday's Grade 2, $302,000 Sky Classic Stakes at Woodbine.
Cloudy's Knight tracked the leaders on the outside in the 1 3/8-mile grass race, and then wore down Sterwins in the final furlong to win by a length. Windward Islands rallied from last in the 10-horse field to end up third, while favored Revved Up finished sixth.
"He relaxed right where I needed him to be," said Ramsey Zimmerman, who rode Cloudy's Knight for trainer Frank Kirby. "When I turned for home, I smooched to him and hollered at him a little, and he really kicked it from there. He was really game."
Cloudy's Knight covered the distance in 2:14.10, and banked $180,000 for SJ Stables LLC.
The Niagara Queen ($3.90) won Sunday's supporting feature under Emma Wilson, the $101,200 Flaming Page Stakes.
The Niagara Queen dueled up front with Sant Elena throughout the 1 1/2-mile turf marathon, and prevailed by a half-length, in a time of 2:28.91. Sheer Enchantment closed for third in the eight-horse field of fillies and mares.
Trained by Mike Doyle, The Niagara Queen earned $60,000 in her first stakes win for Bridle Path Stable and Tommy Roberts.
