Stream Cat holds off Big Booster
ARCADIA, Calif. -- Stream Cat held off a late threat from favored Big Booster to win Saturday's $100,000 Tokyo City Handicap at Santa Anita.
Closing from sixth in a field of seven, Stream Cat won the Grade 3 Tokyo City Handicap by a neck after taking the lead in the final furlong. Ridden by Joe Talamo, Stream Cat ($11.40) ran 1 1/2 miles on the main track in 2:31.92.
Stream Cat was approximately 12 lengths behind pacesetter Zappa for the first half-mile, and moved within nine lengths of the lead after a mile. Zappa began to fade on the final turn, yielding the lead to Kizzy's Chaos, who turned for home with a two-length advantage.
Talamo brought Stream Cat into contention on the rail on the final turn and moved to the outside of Kizzy's Chaos in the stretch, taking the lead past the eighth pole. Stream Cat was fully extended to win, his first victory since the Grade 3 Arlington Handicap on turf last July.
Big Booster, sent off at 6-5, finished two lengths clear of Medjool, the longest shot in the field at 19-1.
Stream Cat races for a partnership and trainer Patrick Biancone. A 6-year-old gelding by Black Minnaloushe, Stream Cat has won 7 of 22 starts and $705,610.
