BALTIMORE -- Payton d'Oro got away with a soft pace and led her rivals from start to finish to take the Grade 2, $150,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on Friday at Pimlico.
Payton d'Oro ($7.20), under Terry Thompson, set fractions of 24.21 seconds, 48.40, 1:12.57, and 1:37.30 for the first mile en route to a final time of 1:49.75 for 1 1/8 miles on the fast main track. Bon Jovi Girl, who was bumped solidly at the start, came on for second, beaten a little more than a length, with favored Casanova Move farther back in third after racing three paths wide on the first turn and four wide on the final turn.
Larry Jones trains Payton d'Oro, who has now won four straight races after losing her first four starts. The Black-Eyed Susan was her first graded stakes win. She is a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, who is also the sire of Kentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra, the morning-line favorite in Saturday's Preakness Stakes. Payton d'Oro is owned by John Ferris and Mike Presley.
