INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Zenyatta breezed six furlongs in 1:14.80 at Hollywood Park on Monday, a workout that was slower than some of her recent drills.
Zenyatta will make her next start in the $250,000 Vanity Handicap on June 13. Monday's work was her second-to-last workout before that race, when she will attempt to stretch her unbeaten streak to 17 races.
Zenyatta worked on Monday with El Vino, a maiden who, like Zenyatta, is trained by John Shirreffs and owned by Jerry and Ann Moss. El Vino started three lengths in front, with jockey Mike Smith keeping a strong hold on Zenyatta. On the turn, Zenyatta moved closer to El Vino and was alongside the workmate in early stretch.
Zenyatta pulled clear of El Vino in the final furlong and finished three lengths in front. On the way back to the barn, Smith said Zenyatta worked "like always. She didn't take a deep breath."
Shirreffs timed Zenyatta galloping out seven furlongs in 1:28.
"It's more how they do it," he said, reflecting on the times. He clocked Zenyatta through a final three furlongs in approximately 36 seconds.
El Vino, a regular workmate of Zenyatta's in recent months, was timed in 1:16, handily.
"She's broken the hearts of a few horses," Shirreffs said of Zenyatta.
In her two preceding workouts, Zenyatta has worked six furlongs in 1:13.20 on May 17 and in 1:13 on May 24. A two-time champion, Zenyatta, 6, has won 16 races and $5,924,580. If she wins the Vanity for an unprecedented third time, she would surpass the 16-race winning streaks of Cigar, Citation and Mister Frisky.
