No Kentucky Derby for J P's Gusto
Updated: April 26, 2011, 3:13 PM ETBy Jay Privman | Daily Racing Form
J P's Gusto on Tuesday joined The Factor as horses who were not expected to run in the Kentucky Derby and whose connections finally made that news official. "We're not running," Dr. John Waken, who owns J P's Gusto under his GEM Inc. banner, said Tuesday. "As far as I know, he leaves for New York today or tomorrow." Waken said J P's Gusto would be trained in New York by Mike Hushion, who trains the older females Nicole H and Harissa for Waken. Hushion will be the third trainer for J P's Gusto, who began his career last year in California with David Hofmans before being placed with Joe Petalino for three races at Oaklawn Park this spring. The defections of J P's Gusto and The Factor move both Shackleford and Twinspired into the Derby field, since both now are in the top 20 in terms of graded stakes earnings. Next on the bubble are Silver Medallion and Anthony's Cross, in that order.
