LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Spiral winner Animal Kingdom led a trio of prospective Kentucky Derby starters who worked over a fast track during a chaotic 15 minutes after the renovation break at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
Animal Kingdom broke off at the six-furlong pole under jockey Robby Albarado, nearly three lengths behind his workmate Meistersinger, but drew off from his company through the final furlong to finish five lengths in front after going six furlongs in 1:13.17.
Animal Kingdom, who finished second in his only previous start over conventional dirt, relaxed nicely during the early portion of the work, posting splits of 24.78, 37.38 and 49.16 seconds or the first half-mile before completing his final quarter in 24.01 and galloping out seven-eighths in 1:26.24.
Florida Derby runner-up Shackleford broke off just behind Animal Kingdom with exercise rider Tammy Fox aboard and was smoking from the outset, getting his opening quarter and three-eighths in 22.88 and 34.41. Despite the blistering pace, he was able to complete five-eighths in 58.83 and gallop out six furlongs in 1:12.58.
Mucho Macho Man was the last of the three Derby runners to breeze and had his regular rider Rajiv Maragh aboard. Mucho Macho Man, winner of the Grade 2 Risen Star, went five furlongs in 1:00.46, completing his final three-eighths in a solid 35.30 but while under some severe pressure through the final sixteenth of a mile. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.82.
Likely Kentucky Oaks favorite R Heat Lighting waited until after the Derby-Oaks session, breezing amongst the regular population. She paid the price just a bit when running up into some traffic near the quarter pole. Despite having to alter course slightly and come wide at that point, she cruised through an impressive maintenance half-mile in 48.32 before galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.98. The last of the Oaks candidates to work during the special session were Kathmanblu, who went five-eighths in 1:01.81, and Summer Soiree, who breezed an easier half-mile in 48.76.
* Twinspired worked five furlongs in 1:01.20 at the Trackside Training Center, according to track clockers, going from the half-mile pole out a furlong past the finish line. His splits were 11.40, 23, and 35.20, with a six-furlong gallop out of 1:18.20.
