Solo homer provides margin as Oregon beats Massachusetts
Reid Penney hit a solo homer, Mitch Lomax struck out eight and Calvin Hermanson worked out of final-inning jam as Lake Oswego, Ore., beat Walpole, Mass., 1-0.
Penney's shot for Lake Oswego (1-1) sailed through light raindrops and landed in the hedges beyond the left-field fence.
"I looked at it as I rounded first and it was cool to see it go out of Williamsport, Pennsylvania,'' said the 12-year-old.
It didn't go quite that far, but the homer was good enough to give Lake Oswego its first win.
Walpole (1-1) mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth after John Adams hustled into second on a blooper to shallow center and Brian Wolpe walked. But Hermanson got Samuel Falkson to hit into a force play to end the game.
