Attack captured on video
HILO, Hawaii -- A Big Island high school basketball player has been dismissed from his team after attacking a referee during a game between Konawaena and Waiakea.
Home video of last Wednesday's game, broadcast Monday by Honolulu television station KITV, showed Kainoa Abril of Konawaena High School slamming headfirst into referee Mason Souza. At the time, Souza was talking with Konawaena head coach Donny Awa.
Earlier in the game, Abril and a Waiakea player were ejected from the contest.
Konawaena has dismissed Abril from the team.
Keith Morioka, executive secretary of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, said Monday that there was no precedent for any further action on the part of the league.
