Japan Star Leads Senior World Championship

After one round of qualifying Monday in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Suncoast Senior World Championship, international bowling star Junichi Yajima leads the field with a 215 average.

Yajima, a 41-time Japan Professional Bowlers Association (JPBA) champion from Tokyo, leads the field by only one pin (1,290).

"I just bowled good today," said Yajima, who joined PBA in 2001. "The conditions are very tough. There was no hooking the ball today - I just bowled a straight line."

Yajima competed in the American Bowling Congress (ABC) Senior Masters last week, where he finished sixth. His participation in consecutive tournaments marks Yajima's annual visit to the United States to compete in PBA events.

"I have been coming here since 1967 to compete in the PBA tournaments," said Yajima, owner of one PBA Regional title. He won his lone Regional championship in 1974 at Dick Weber Lanes (St. Louis). "There is only one senior tournament in Japan. I hope to compete in tournaments in the PBA more often."

Dave Soutar, Ross Packard and George Pappas are tied for second (1,289).

Soutar, Bradenton, Fla., stayed in the hunt and finished with the highest game of the day (279). "Fortunately I had one big game and it was enough to keep me right in it," Soutar said. "Once you find the pocket, you have to stay right there. The key is to stay clean and hit the pockets."

The leader of the afternoon qualifying squad, Mark Roth, Wall Township, N.J., rolled a 272 in his last game to finish in fifth place (1,286).

The entire field returns today and tomorrow for the final qualifying rounds. After 18 games of qualifying, the field is cut to the top 64 bowlers who advance to an additional nine-game qualifying round Thursday. The top 32 begin single-elimination, bracket match play Thursday night with a best-of-seven games round. Friday's competition is best-of-five as the field is pared from 16, to eight, four, and two. The final match starts at approximately 5 p.m. The champion takes home $20,000.
