Jankovic not at her best in Paris but rolls anyway
PARIS -- Jelena Jankovic easily advanced to the second round of the French Open on Tuesday by beating Stephanie Foretz of France 6-2, 6-2.
The fourth-seeded Serb, who won two clay-court warmups heading into the tournament at Roland Garros, converted four of her five break points in the first set and then broke her unseeded opponent three more times in the second.
"You don't play your best tennis in the first round," said Jankovic, who was broken twice in the first set. "It was a little bit slow and the balls were quite heavy."
Jankovic, who is ranked fifth, won the Italian Open earlier this month, making her one of the favorites in the French Open. But the 22-year-old Serb pulled out of the semifinals of last week's clay-court event in Strasbourg because of gastroenteritis.
"I recovered well and I'm ready to play," Jankovic said. " ... After that match, I was throwing up and didn't feel that great. But after two days I was taking care, and I was resting and taking a lot of medicine, and now I'm healthy."
No. 6 Nicole Vaidisova, who pulled out of three warmup tournaments with a right wrist injury, beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 6-4, 6-3.
"For the last week and half, I've been pain-free," the 18-year-old Czech said. "But of course I'm lacking some matches."
She still tapes her wrist when she plays, but she said it was just as a precaution.
"I don't have to think anymore about the wrist, if it's going to hurt it or not hurt it," Vaidisova said. "I don't have to have it in the back of my mind."
No. 13 Elena Dementieva defeated Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 6-2; and No. 28 Mara Santangelo of Italy beat Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 6-4. No. 11 Nadia Petrova of Russia lost to Kveta Peschke of Germany 7-5, 5-7, 6-0.
The first two days of the tournament were marked by rain. Only 14 matches were completed before Tuesday.
Venus Williams, a five-time major champion who had not won a Grand Slam match in 11 months, reached the second round Monday by beating French teen Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-3 on a damp court after a three-hour delay at the start of the day.
"I was already fortunate to be first on," said Williams, one of six women to advance as three rain delays at Roland Garros forced organizers to postpone or suspend 58 matches.
Maria Sharapova and Amelie Mauresmo will play no earlier than Wednesday.
Both Jankovic and Vaidisova will also be back in action Wednesday -- Jankovic faces Catalina Castano of Colombia, while Vaidisova takes on Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan.
"I feel more mature, more experienced," said Jankovic, a semifinalist at the 2006 U.S. Open. "All I care [about] is to keep improving."
