Garbin ousts Rubin in straight sets
BALI, Indonesia -- Italy's Tathiana Garbin upset American Chanda Rubin 6-1, 6-4 Wednesday in the first round of the Wismilak International.
Second-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan was also upset, as countrywoman Aiko Nakamura beat her 6-4, 7-6 (1). Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia beat Serbia's Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Nadia Petrova of Russia was ahead 6-2, 3-1 when Japan's Akiko Morigami retired because of a wrist injury.
In second-round matches, Argentina's Gisela Dulko beat Italy's Flavia Pennetta 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Cho Yoon-jeong of South Korea defeated Kristina Brandi of Puerto Rico, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
