Monaco beats third-seeded Verdasco
PALERMO, Sicily -- Defending champion and top-seeded Nicolas Massu of Chile defeated Spain's David Sanchez 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday in his first-round match of the Campionati Internazionali di Sicilia.
Massu, who won two gold medals at the Athens Olympics, will play Italy's Potito Starace in the second round of the year's final ATP event on clay.
In second-round play Wednesday, Juan Monaco of Argentina rallied to beat third-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, while seventh-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer came from behind to defeat countryman Alex Calatrava 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
In the quarterfinals, Ferrer will play Russia's fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko, who topped Spaniard Marc Lopez 6-1, 6-4.
In a second-round match, France's Olivier Mutis upset sixth-seeded Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-3. Nadal was coming off Spain's Davis Cup semifinal victory over France last weekend.
In other first-round play, eighth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic beat Spain's Oscar Hernandez 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3.
