PATTAYA, Thailand -- Fourth-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel used a strong baseline game to defeat Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain 7-6 (4), 6-3 Wednesday and reach the quarterfinals of the Pattaya Women's Open.
The 18-year-old Peer is ranked No. 45 and is the No. 2 female player in her country behind Anna Smashnova.
The only seeded player to fall was seventh-seeded Aiko Nakamura
of Japan, who lost to Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain 6-2, 6-0.
Third-seeded Catalina Castano of Colombia beat Sun Tiantian of
China 6-3, 6-2, eliminating the last Chinese player in the field.
Fifth-seeded Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain was briefly tested by
qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada before advancing 7-5, 6-2.
