Laine advances to Pattaya Women's Open quarters
PATTAYA, Thailand -- Emma Laine of Finland reached the quarterfinals of a WTA tournament for the first time, beating eighth-seeded Mara Santangelo of Italy 6-1, 7-5 Thursday in the second round of the Pattaya Women's Open.
"I played well in first set but I made more mistakes than her in the second set," Laine said. "Then at 2-5 I found my game again and just kept going."
Former No. 1 doubles player Paola Suarez of Argentina quit with a leg injury in the second set against Sybille Bammer of Austria. Suarez was ahead 6-1, 1-0.
Also, Croatia's Jelena Kostanic defeated Italy's Maria Elena Camerin 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, and Hungary's Melinda Czink beat Russia's Ekaterina Bychkova 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7).
