Llagostera Vives, Bammer move into Pattaya semis
PATTAYA, Thailand -- Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain defeated Catalina Castano of Colombia 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 Friday to reach the semifinals of the Pattaya Women's Open.
Llagostera Vives will play Jelena Kostanic of Croatia, who defeated Emma Laine of Finland 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.
Llagostera Vives recovered from one set down and 0-3 in the second for her first win over the 38th-ranked Castano. She turned the match around with accurate groundstrokes, winning four straight games to lead 4-3 in the second.
The Spaniard, ranked No. 62, needed only one break to go up at 5-3 in the third. She fought off a break point to win the match.
Austrian Sybille Bammer reached her first semifinal, beating Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-4, 6-3. The 25-year-old Bammer will face Shahar Peer of Israel, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain.
Bammer needed nine years on the pro tour to reach the semifinals of a WTA tournament.
