Agent denies report Serena is out for rest of year
Serena Willams' agent denied a report in a British newspaper that the seven-time Grand Slam champion will sit out the rest of the season.
"Serena will be in L.A. [Wednesday], and we plan to release something about the next few tournaments, but as far as I know, she has not said she won't play the rest of the year," Williams' agent, Jill Smoller, told The Miami Herald. "I don't know where that came from."
Smoller made similar remarks to ESPN.
The Guardian reported that Williams, who has not played since the Australian Open in January and has dropped to No. 107 in the world rankings, would announce soon that she is done for the year. The paper did not cite a source in its report.
Williams has struggled with injuries since having surgery on her left knee in 2003.
