Venus Williams wins first match since Wimbledon
LUXEMBOURG -- Venus Williams is apparently over her left wrist injury.
The unseeded American, who has been sidelined since Wimbledon, upset sixth-seeded Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Fortis Championships on Wednesday.
Defeating the Serb for the second time in as many career meetings, Williams next will face Polish teen Agnieszka Radwanska.
The 17-year-old Radwanska, who is ranked 95th in the world, also scored an upset on Wednesday, toppling Italian Mara Santangelo 5-7, 7-6 (8), 6-3.
In the second round, top seeds Elena Dementieva, Patty Schnyder and Dinara Safina all posted straight-set victories in the $600,000 Tier II hardcourt event.
One of four players to get a first-round bye, the top-seeded Dementieva overcame an early challenge to dispatch Samantha Stosur of Australia 7-5, 6-1. The Russian will face either Williams or Radwanska in the quarterfinals.
Schnyder, the third seed from Switzerland, rolled past American Chanda Rubin 6-0, 6-3.
Safina bounced Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 6-3 to set up a meeting with Czech Kveta Peschke in the quarterfinals. The fourth-seeded Russian won the previous meeting with Peschke at Berlin this season.
Peschke reached the round of eight for the first time this season with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Italian Karin Knapp.
In another opening-round match, Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia breezed past Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 6-4, 6-1.
Defending champion Kim Clijsters is not entered because of a wrist injury.
