Jankovic, who arrived Monday after missing a flight connection, used a strong first serve in the first set to keep Schruff at bay. In the second set, Jankovic clinched the match by hitting four aces on vital points.

Third-seeded Daniel Hantuchova of Slovakia beat unseeded countrywoman Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in another first-round match at the $145,000 tournament.

The pair had never previously met in a WTA event.

Hantuchova had two aces and won 71 percent of first-serve points, 62 percent on second serve. Cibulkova served eight double-faults and managed to win only 35 percent of her second-serve points.

Hantuchova converted five of eight break-point opportunities and saved three of five.

"The first set I played great, but after that I sort of relaxed a little bit too much and started to make too many mistakes," Hantuchova said. "In the third set, I started to focus again."

In other first-round matches, fifth-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia defeated Lilia Osterloh of the United States 5-7, 6-2, 6-3; American Laura Granville downed Italy's Romina Oprandi 6-3, 6-4; and Paola Suarez of Argentina upset sixth-seeded Martina Muller of Germany 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
