Jankovic, Hantuchova advance at Dubai Open

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Fifth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia beat Aravane Rezai of France 6-1, 6-2 on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Dubai Open.

Rezai hit some impressive winners against Jankovic but was let down by a weak first serve and unforced errors.

Eighth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia also advanced, beating Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-1, 6-3.

Hantuchova, who dropped only one point on her serve in the first set, raced to a 5-1 lead. Vesnina broke in the second set to lead 2-0, but Hantuchova recovered, dropping just two points in the final three games.

Austrian qualifier Tamira Paszek, ranked 127th, upset No. 23 Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia 7-5, 6-3. Paszek plays defending champion Justine Henin in the second round.

Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 6-3, 6-4, and Vera Dushevina earned a second-round match against second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo. Dushevina's opponent, Elena Likhovtseva, retired after losing the first set 6-2.

Also, Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain defeated Anne Kremer of Luxembourg 6-3, 6-4, and Mara Santangelo of Italy beat Martina Muller of Germany 6-3, 7-6 (4).
