Martin beats second-seeded Ferrero at Valencia Open
VALENCIA, Spain -- Alberto Martin upset second-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4, 6-2 Thursday in the second round of the Valencia Open.
Ferrero said he had a fever and was not physically fit for the match.
David Ferrer, who had been the top-seeded player at the tournament, withdrew Wednesday with a back injury.
Fifth-seeded Gilles Simon of France also lost, falling to Marcel Granollers-Pujol of Spain 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Also, Evgeny Korolev of Russia topped Sergio Roitman of Argentina 1-6, 7-5, 6-0, Ivan Navarro Pastor of Spain beat Augustin Gensse of France 7-6 (11), 6-4, and Potito Starace of Italy defeated Pablo Andujar of Spain 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
