Tenth-seeded Dementieva tops Santangelo

BERLIN -- Elena Dementieva rallied to beat Mara Santangelo of Italy 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 Tuesday in the first round of the rain-delayed German Open.

The 10th-seeded Russian overcame 10 double-faults and a 3-0 deficit in the third set.

"It was tough conditions for both of us," said Dementieva, referring to a rain delay and strong wind. "I'm just happy to come off the court with a win."

Anna Chakvetadze defeated Samantha Stosur 3-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5), and Ana Ivanovic routed American Laura Granville 6-2, 6-1.

Kateryna Bondarenko downed Kaia Kanepi, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-2, Martina Muller topped Eleni Daniilidou 6-0, 6-2 and American Meilen Tu edged Katarina Srebotnik 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Elena Likhovtseva defeated Emilie Loit 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

Top-seeds Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo play Wednesday at the clay-court event, a warmup for the French Open.

Henin will face German wild card Tatjana Malek, who finished off her suspended match from Monday with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Vasilisa Bardina.

"Everybody knows I like it here. I've had a lot of success here," Henin said. "The goal is to get in some matches and get ready for the French."

The top-ranked Belgian won at Roland Garros in 2003, '05 and '06 and twice won titles at the German Open. She lost to Nadia Petrova in the final last year.

Mauresmo will face Yan Zi, who defeated Kristina Barrois 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
