Szavay to play Shaughnessy in KIA Open quarterfinals
BARCELONA, Spain -- Agnes Szavay upset top-seeded Francesca Schiavone 6-1, 6-1 on Wednesday in the second round of the Barcelona KIA Open.
The 82nd-ranked Szavay will face American Meghann Shaughnessy in the quarterfinals of the clay-court event. Shaughnessy defeated Laura Pous Tio 7-5, 6-4.
Alla Kudryavtseva advanced with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Emmanuelle Gagliardi. Third-seeded Emilie Loit beat Camille Pin 6-1, 6-1, and Kaia Kanepi eased past Maria Emilia Salerni 6-3, 6-0.
Flavia Pennetta downed Tatjana Malek 6-3, 6-4, and Virginie Razzano outlasted Melinda Czink 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2. Edina Gallovits completed the quarterfinal field by defeating Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4, 6-2.
