Vliegen beats former champ Gaudio in first round of Swiss Open

7/9/2007 - Tennis

GSTAAD, Switzerland -- Belgium's Kristof Vliegen sent
struggling Gaston Gaudio to another loss Monday, beating the 2004
French Open champion 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-4 in the opening round of the
Swiss Open.

Guadio won the Swiss Open in 2005. The Argentine, once a top-10
player, is now ranked No. 103 and his record this year is 6-13.

The loss marked Gaudio's earliest exit in seven appearances in
Gstaad. Beside the '05 title, he was also once a runner-up and
twice a semifinalist.

On Monday, Gaudio had momentum when he won the second-set
tiebreaker, but an hour rain delay allowed Vliegen to refocus.
Vliegen lost to Gaudio in this event the same round in straight
sets four years ago.

Fourth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, a semifinalist
last year, defeated Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic 7-6 (0), 7-6
(3) in the only other completed match before rain ended play.
