Second-seeded Muller beats qualifier Klepac at Palermo
PALERMO, Sicily -- Second-seeded Martina Muller of Germany beat Slovenian qualifier Andreja Klepac 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the Palermo International on Tuesday.
Muller will next play Conchita Martinez Granados of Spain, who defeated Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 6-3, 6-3.
Also, No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland downed Mariya Koryttseva of the Ukraine, 6-1, 6-4 and No. 8 Agnes Szavay of Hungary swept past Romanian qualifier Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-2, 6-1.
Earlier, fourth-seeded Emilie Loit of France beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain 6-4, 6-3 to become the first seed to advance on the slow clay at the Country Time Club following a series of upsets.
Qualifier Sorana Cirstea of Romania surprised No. 7 Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 6-4, while top-seeded Michaella Krajicek and No. 6 Aravane Rezai both lost on Monday.
In the late match, Karin Knapp rallied past fifth-seeded Roberta Vinci 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
In other matches, Klara Zakopalova beat Silvia Disderi 6-2, 6-3, Ekaterina Bychkova defeated Ekaterina Ivanova 6-3, 6-1, Edina Gallovits routed Maria Elena Camerin 6-0, 6-1, Lourdes Dominguez Lino beat Antonella Serra Zanetti 6-3, 6-3, and wild card Sara Errani eliminated Virginie Razzano 6-2, 6-0.
