Hingis loses, Kuznetsova out at China Open
BEIJING -- Martina Hingis was upset by local favorite Peng Shuai 7-5, 6-1 at the China Open on Wednesday, while defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova withdrew with a stomach injury.
Kuznetsova dropped out before her second-round match against American Abigail Spears.
"When I got up this morning, my abdomen was getting worse and worse although I received treatment yesterday," said Kuznetsova, the top seed who was given a first-round bye.
Kuznetsova, the top seed, arrived in Beijing fresh from helping Russia clinch the Fed Cup title last weekend and had a first-round bye. Before that, she was routed by Justine Henin in the final of the U.S. Open.
Maria Emilia Salerni of Argentina, who replaced Kuznetsova, went on to beat Spears 6-2, 7-5.
Also, third-seeded Amelie Mauresmo beat Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-2, 6-2 in a second-round match, and Lindsay Davenport topped fellow American Julie Ditty 6-0, 6-2 in a first-rounder.
