LUXEMBOURG -- Fifth-seeded Marion Bartoli beat defending champion Alona Bondarenko 6-3, 6-2 Tuesday in the first round of the Fortis Championships.

The Wimbledon finalist will face Sybille Bammer, who beat Tamira Paszek 6-0, 6-2.

Meilen Tu of the United States also advanced, defeating Julia Vakulenko 6-4, 6-3. Klara Zakopalova beat Emilie Loit 7-5, 3-1 after the Frenchwoman retired with an injury.

American Meghan Shaughnessy lost to Zuzana Ondraskova 6-4, 6-1, and Vera Zvonareva defeated Julia Goerges 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2.
