Fleishman wins in three sets in Japan Open's first round
TOKYO -- Zack Fleishman of the United States defeated Kei Nishikori of Japan 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-1 in the first round of the Japan Open on Monday.
Top-seeded David Ferrer of Spain has a first-round bye along with Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, seeded fourth. Defending champion Roger Federer pulled out as he continues to rest after the U.S. Open and Davis Cup.
In other men's matches, Ivan Navarro of Spain defeated Robin Haase of the Netherlands 7-6 (5), 7-6 (0) while Germany's Mischa Zverev beat Italy's Fabio Fognini 6-1, 7-6 (7).
Taiwan's Lu Yen-hsun defeated Thailand's Danai Udomchoke 6-7 (4), 7-6 (7), 6-1.
In the women's bracket, Casey Dellacqua of Australia defeated Severine Bremond of France, 6-4, 6-0; and Urszula Radwanska of Poland coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sophie Ferguson of Australia.
Late addition Venus Williams had a first-round bye.
