Youzhny ousted, 7th-seeded Ferrero loses in ABN Amro first round

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands -- Defending champion Mikhail Youzhny was ousted by Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 7-6 (3) 6-4 in the opening round of the ABN Amro on Monday.

Youzhny blew a 4-2 lead, losing his serve twice and converted one of eight break point chances.

"I was very unfortunate to get Youzhny in the first round," said Tipsarevic, playing in his first event since the Australian Open. "I just stayed positive and it worked."

Russia qualifier Teimuraz Gabashvili upset seventh-seeded
Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 6-1.

Both players held serve until the 12th game when Gabashvili won a break point after a replay showed Ferrero's shot was out.

Croatia's Ivo Karlovic hit a dozen aces in beating Belgium's
Olivier Rochus 6-1, 6-2, and Michael Berrer beat qualifier
Matthias Bachinger 6-3, 6-2 in an all-German matchup.
