Davenport's Fed Cup lobbying efforts fail with Williams sisters
Davenport will lead the U.S. team that faces Russia late next month in Moscow. She said she lobbied Venus Williams about playing when they crossed paths at a tournament in Memphis last month.
"It didn't work," Davenport said, laughing. "She said that she wasn't going. I tried for about one minute, and she just smiled and she's like, 'Nope.' "
Davenport raised the subject with Serena Williams this week at the Sony Ericsson Open.
"I said, 'Hey, are you going?' And she's like, 'Nope,' with the same smile. I totally respect players' decisions. It's not easy to go to Moscow in April."
Fed Cup rookie Ashley Harkleroad is expected to play singles along with Davenport.
