Davenport will lead the U.S. team that faces Russia late next
month in Moscow. She said she lobbied Venus Williams about playing
when they crossed paths at a tournament in Memphis last month.
"It didn't work," Davenport said, laughing. "She said that
she wasn't going. I tried for about one minute, and she just smiled
and she's like, 'Nope.' "
Davenport raised the subject with Serena Williams this week at
the Sony Ericsson Open.
"I said, 'Hey, are you going?' And she's like, 'Nope,' with the
same smile. I totally respect players' decisions. It's not easy to
go to Moscow in April."
Fed Cup rookie Ashley Harkleroad is expected to play singles
along with Davenport.
