Canas dumps Hernandez in opener at Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain -- Ninth-seeded Guillermo Canas of Argentina beat Spain's Oscar Hernandez 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the Barcelona Open on Monday.

Russia's Dmitry Tursunov defeated Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-4, 6-3 and Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Spain's Jose Antonio Sanchez de Luna in the only other victories by seeded players.

Spaniard Fernando Verdasco was the only seeded player to lose on the opening day of the clay court tournament. The 29th-ranked and No. 13 seed lost in straight sets to Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador.

James Blake is the sole American player left in the draw after Robby Ginepri lost 6-4, 6-2 to Yuri Schukin of Kazakhstan. Blake will face German Denis Gremelmayr, who adavnced when his opponent Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo retired with a leg injury down 2-1 in the second set after losing the opener 7-6 (7).

Defending champion Rafael Nadal, fresh off a fourth straight Masters Series title at Monte Carlo, plays Wednesday.

Seventh-ranked David Nalbandian will face Davis Cup teammate Agustin Calleri after the Argentine beat Thomas Johansson of Sweden 6-1, 6-3.

Mario Ancic saved all 12 break chances he faced while breaking Germany's Mischa Zverev five times for a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The Croat next plays Andy Murray.

Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina will play Spain's Marc Lopez next after both players won their singles matches.

Other first round winners were Dutch player Robin Haase and Spanish pair Gabriel Trujillo-Soler and Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
