Fed Cup final to play out on outdoor clay courts in Madrid
MADRID, Spain -- Defending champion Russia and Spain will contest the Fed Cup final on the outdoor clay courts of Madrid's Campo Villa club.
Final approval for the Sept. 13-14 tie is subject to an inspection visit, the International Tennis Federation said on its Web site Tuesday.
Five-time champion Spain beat Italy and China to reach its first final since 2002 and is bidding for its first title since 1998.
Russia, which boasts five women ranked in the top 10, defeated Italy in the 2007 final and is seeking its fourth crown in five years.
Spain will counter with three players who played well at the French Open. Carla Suarez Navarro reached the quarterfinals in singles and Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual won the doubles title.
