Kuznetsova joins Venus, Davenport on sideline at Carson
CARSON, Calif. -- Svetlana Kuznetsova withdrew from the East West Bank Classic because of a leg injury, joining Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport on the sideline.
"I am so sad not to be able to play L.A. this year, especially as L.A. is one of my favorite tournaments," the Russian player said in a statement Sunday. "I hope to come back next year to give my fans in L.A. something to cheer about."
Melinda Czink of Hungary took Kuznetsova's place in the draw for the tournament that was scheduled to begin Monday.
Serena Williams was in the Carson draw released Sunday, and is seeded second and received a first-round bye. She withdrew from Saturday's semifinals of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford after injuring her knee.
Venus Williams and Davenport withdrew last week from the tournament in Carson, with both citing right knee injuries.
