Hantuchova, Schnyder, Petrova advance to semifinals
BALI, Indonesia -- Top seed Daniela Hantuchova struggled to overcome Taiwan's Chan Yung-Jan in the quarterfinals of the Bali Classic on Friday, taking 2 hours, 37 minutes to claim a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 victory.
Hantuchova appeared as if she was going humiliate her inexperienced opponent, surrendering just five points in the opening four games. But once Chan settled, her powerful groundstrokes placed Hantuchova under pressure.
Many of Hantuchova's shots went long, but a break at the start of the final set allowed her some mental relief, and a further break for 4-1 sealed Chan's fate.
"I'm just so excited to be in the semis after what I had to go through with my injury," said Hantuchova, who missed 10 weeks earlier this year with a stress fracture.
"I was very proud how I kept fighting, tried to weather the storm, because she was playing unbelievable. She was going for every shot and at one point there was not much I could have done."
Hantuchova will next play Austrian teenager Tamira Paszek, who defeated weary Italian No. 3 seed Flavia Pennetta 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Patty Schnyder brushed aside Poland's Marta Domachowska with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, showing more consistency in the rallies and more variety in her game.
Schnyder will now meet Nadia Petrova after the fourth-seeded Russian recovered from being down 3-0 in the first set to beat No. 5 seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-4, 6-3.
"After winning the first set I felt a little bit more in charge of the game," said Petrova. "I felt more confidence on my service games in the second set and overall I'm quite happy with the performance."
