Oudin needs three sets to knock out third-seeded Bammer in Bell Challenge
QUEBEC CITY -- Melanie Oudin upset third-seeded Sybille Bammer of Austria 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 on Monday in the Bell Challenge.
Bammer, ranked 26th in the world, was the second-highest seed in the tournament after Italy's Flavia Pennetta, originally seeded second, withdrew following the death of close friend and fellow tennis player Federico Luzzi.
In other matches Canadians Valerie Tetreault and Rebecca Marino earned victories. Tetreault defeated Mathilde Johansson 6-1, 7-5 in the first round and will face the winner of Monday's late match between sixth-seeded Bethanie Mattek and Sharon Fichman.
Marino beat former tournament champion Brenda Schultz-McCarthy of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3 in the final round of singles qualifying.
