MUNICH -- Marin Cilic won the first eight games and swept past Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-0, 6-4 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the BMW Open.

The second-seed Cilic is the highest ranked player at the clay-court tournament following the withdrawal of defending champion Fernando Gonzalez because of an ankle injury.

The Croat double-faulted on his first match point but closed it out on the next.

Kohlschreiber won his first title here two years ago and had not lost to Cilic in two previous meetings.

Cilic is 23-6 with two titles this year, reaching his highest career ranking at No. 15.

Seventh-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu of France also reached the last eight, defeating Denis Gremelmayr 6-1, 6-4. Mikhail Youzhny upset third-seeded Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (2), 6-4.

Sixth-seeded Nicolas Kiefer was upset by Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 7-6 (8).
