GUANGZHOU, China -- Top-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain beat Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Guangzhou Open.

Angela Haynes of the United States lost to third-seeded Peng Shuai of China 6-2, 7-5. Olga Savchuk of Ukraine rallied past fourth-seeded Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Also, eighth-seeded Alberta Brianti beat Sophie Ferguson 7-6 (1), 6-4, Anastasija Sevastova stopped Lu Jing Jing 6-4, 6-2 and Chanelle Scheepers defeated Arantxa Parra Santonja 7-6 (12), 5-7, 6-3.
