Malaga, Tenerife bids rejected
BARCELONA, Spain -- The Davis Cup final between Spain and the Czech Republic in December will be played in either Valencia or Barcelona.
The Spanish tennis federation said Wednesday the International Tennis Federation had rejected bids by Tenerife and Malaga to host the best-of-five series Dec. 4-6 because they were open-air venues. Malaga's stadium also fell under the 12,000-seating capacity minimum.
Paul Smith, the ITF's executive director, said on his organization's Web site that Valencia's bid still needed to be analyzed. The ITF said Barcelona's Palau Sant Jordi could host again after being the site of Spain's first win in 2000.
The federation will announce its choice on Saturday.
Spain is the defending Davis Cup champion.
