Stosur, Schiavone in Japan final
OSAKA, Japan -- Samantha Stosur earned another shot at winning her first WTA Tour singles title, reaching the Japan Women's Open final by upsetting defending champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 on Saturday.
Stosur, the world's 15th-ranked player, has lost all five of her previous tour finals. The third-seeded Australian will play for the title Sunday against fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy.
Schiavone needed just 59 minutes for a 6-2, 6-1 win over India's Sania Mirza. The Italian is 1-9 in WTA finals.
Stosur had lost to Wozniacki in two previous meetings this year, but improved to 2-2 against the sixth-ranked player.
Stosur broke the top-seeded Dane to go up 5-4 in the final set and then held serve to defeat the U.S. Open finalist at Utsubo Tennis Center. She finished with 12 aces.
Schiavone broke Mirza four times and never faced a break point to improve to 3-0 against the unseeded Indian.
Schiavone's title came in the Gastein Ladies in 2007.
