COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil -- Top-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain advanced to the quarterfinals of the Brazil Open with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win over Chile's Nicolas Massu on Wednesday.

Fourth-seeded Igor Andreev of Russia also reached the quarterfinals of the outdoor event on clay, beating Rui Machado of Portugal 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

In the day's two other matches, sixth seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay beat Frederico Gil of Portugal 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (3) and Argentine Carlos Berlocq defeated countryman Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6 (5), 6-2.

The victory will give Ferrero a boost. He won his first-round match on Tuesday after opening-round losses in the Australian Open and another tournament in New Zealand.

Andreev, 26, reached his first quarterfinals of an ATP event since August. He won his two break points in the third set to close out the match in 2 hours, 33 minutes.

Andreev, who pushed top-ranked Roger Federer to four sets before losing in the first round of the Australian Open, next faces Cuevas.
