2001
• Off to a rocky start, he only reached one final early in the year -- the Dubai Open in February. He retired against Juan Carlos Ferrero.
• Reached the third round at the French Open and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, where he fell victim to the aces of eventual champion Goran Ivaniseivc 7-6 (2), 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3).
• Won two titles in the last part of the season at Tashkent and St. Petersburg.
2000
• Surprised everyone by defeating Pete Sampras, who had not lost a Grand Slam final he'd appeared in since 1995, to win the U.S. Open and his first Grand Slam title. It was Sampras' first straight-sets loss in a Slam final.
• The next week in Tashkent, he became the first player since Ivan Lendl in 1985 to win a title the week after a Slam. Won back to back titles in Barcelona, against Juan Carlos Ferrero, and in Mallorca, against Mikael Tillstrom. Won his first title in Russia at St. Petersburg by defeating Dominik Hrbaty.
• Led the ATP with seven titles and became the youngest player to finish the year at No. 2 since 19-year-old Boris Becker in 1986. Was the first player under 21 to win seven titles in a season since Mats Wilander won nine in 1983. Led the ATP in matches won (73) and finals reached (9). Heavy favorite to end the year at No. 1 going into the Tennis Masters Cup, but Safin lost in the semifinals to Andre Agassi. He still had a chance if Gustavo Kuerten were to lose a match. However, Kuerten had back-to-back victories against Pete Sampras (semis) and Andre Agassi (final) to give Kuerten the No. 1 spot.
• Reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the French Open.
• Won his first Tennis Masters Series title in Toronto by defeating Harel Levy. Reached the finals at Hamburg before losing in a fifth set tiebreak to Gustavo Kuerten. Reached his second consecutive final at Paris and won by defeating Mark Philippoussis in a fifth-set tiebreak on his sixth match point.
1999
• Dropped only one set in five matches on his way to his first ATP title in Boston. Reached the fourth round at the French Open.
• Reached the semifinals in St. Petersburg, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Reached his first Tennis Masters Series final in Paris before losing to Agassi in five sets. More than doubled his match win total (39) from the previous year (17).
• As the No. 2 Russian, helped his country to the Davis Cup semifinals by winning a decisive fifth match in the first round and quarterfinals.
1998
• Finished the year in the Top 50 and made tour debut in Moscow where he lost in the first round.
• Reached the fourth round at French Open and the U.S. Open.
