WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The U.S. Tennis Association is giving 16 players a chance to win a wild-card invitation to the U.S. Open via a playoff.
One man and one woman will get a berth in the Grand Slam tournament's main draw after competing Wednesday through Friday at the USTA Training Center Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla.
Patrick McEnroe, general manager of player development for the USTA, says this system "sends a strong message to our players that opportunities such as a U.S. Open wild card are meant to be earned through hard work, dedication and competition."
The U.S. Open starts Aug. 30.
