Jets sign veteran S Ed Reed

Ed Reed was out of a job Tuesday after being released by the Texans. But before he had time to file unemployment papers, the veteran safety reached an agreement with the Jets. Reed is heading to a familiar system as he played for Rex Ryan from 2002 to 2008 during Ryan's time as an assistant with the Ravens. What will Reed add to the Jets' secondary?

Are Jets legit playoff contenders?

Each week, we get a different set of New York Jets. One game, they're beating the New England Patriots. The next, they're losing by 40 to the Cincinnati Bengals. Then, Sunday, they win 26-20 over the New Orleans Saints -- whose only previous loss all season came against those same New England Patriots. Add it all up, and Rex Ryan's team is 5-4, alternating victories and defeats in each of the first nine weeks. Which means ... we don't know. Are the men in green for real? And what to make of New Orleans (now 6-2)?

NFL Week 9 -- Saints at Jets

The New Orleans Saints have been remarkably steady this season, winning six of their seven games thanks to a strong pass offense and solid D. The New York Jets? Let's just call them erratic. Rex Ryan's crew is 4-4, so it's doing something right, but followed a win over the New England Patriots with a lopsided 49-9 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. New York has alternated wins and losses all season. Will the trend continue?

NFL Week 8 -- Jets at Bengals

Bet you didn't peg this one as a matchup to watch when scanning the schedule before the season. Such is the unpredictable nature of the NFL -- that the supposedly worst-in-the-league New York Jets (4-3) currently sit in a tie for the AFC's final playoff spot. Is New York a legit contender? Has Rex Ryan saved his job? And what to make of the Cincinnati Bengals (5-2), aka the Cardiac Cats?

Jets for real? Pats in trouble?

They needed extra time and some extra yards -- courtesy of a bizarre and unexpected penalty against Chris Jones -- but the New York Jets topped the rival New England Patriots 30-27 on Sunday. This came despite the return of Rob Gronkowski, who excelled (eight catches for 114 yards). But it wasn't enough, with Tom Brady failing to throw a touchdown pass and the rash of injuries to the New England defense clearly showing. What's next for these two teams?
