Twice this season, Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish has entered the eighth inning against Houston having allowed no hits. On both occasions, the Astros have played the spoiler. This time, it was Carlos Corporan breaking up Darvish's no-hitter with one out in the eighth inning on a home run.

It wasn't as dramatic as Darvish's brush with history in April, when he was one out from a perfect game. But there was a questionable balls-and-strikes call Monday that led to Rangers catcher A.J. Pierzynski being ejected. That naturally leaves us wondering what would have happened if Jonathan Villar had stuck out instead of walking and Pierzynski stayed in the game. Does it take a certain amount of luck to throw a no-no? And will Darvish, who clearly has the stuff to accomplish the feat, ever pull it off?

Better luck next time

Did A.J. Pierzynski getting tossed for arguing affect Darvish's no-hit bid? We'll never know, but we do know it helps to be lucky when throwing a no-hitter.

Thrill of a lifetime

Rangers principal owner Nolan Ryan threw seven no-hitters but only appeared in one World Series. Both are great moments, but which would you prefer?

MLB trade deadline passes quietly

The Boston Red Sox got Jake Peavy late Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Baltimore Orioles snagged Bud Norris, while the Arizona Diamondbacks shipped Ian Kennedy to the San Diego Padres. And that was about it for a quiet deadline that saw few impact players move, despite several teams seemingly needing improvement. Of course, there's no guarantee a midseason acquisition will make a difference, while top prospects can change franchises -- or at least provide years worth of value.

Does NFL have an image problem?

The news of former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez and former Browns linebacker Ausar Walcott being arrested on murder and attempted murder charges, respectively, was disturbing enough for the NFL, but when you consider it is the continuation of a long line of misconduct by current and former players since February, the question of whether the NFL has an image problem comes into focus. Despite commissioner Roger Goodell's implementation of a personal conduct policy in 2007, arrests have gone up significantly during his tenure. However, so have the league's revenues. Even if the NFL does have an image problem, is it one of much concern?

Rangers take a chance on Manny

The long, strange odyssey of Manny Ramirez is starting yet another chapter. The Texas Rangers have signed the 12-time All-Star to a minor league contract following his impressive showing in the Chinese Professional Baseball League where he hit .352 and smacked eight home runs. Ramirez will cut his hair (per the Rangers' minor league rules), donate his salary to charity and begin his path back to the majors in Triple-A Round Rock. Will he be successful? Would you want him on your team?
