Mark Sanchez likely done for season
More bad news for Mark Sanchez: It appears the embattled Jets quarterback will require surgery that will force him to miss the entire 2013 season. Sanchez already had been fighting a battle for his starting job (now won by default by Geno Smith), and the news puts his future with the team in doubt. He's had some success as a starter, but with his recent struggles, Sanchez's time as a team's primary option may be over.

NFL Week 2: Jets at Patriots
Both the Jets and Patriots earned hard-fought victories in Week 1, but neither team had much time to celebrate. With a Thursday night tilt looming in Foxborough, the Jets have been busy coaching up Geno Smith for his first battle against Bill Belichick and the Patriots are huddled away trying to make sense of their receiving game. Which team will study their way to 2-0? Is the matchup still a good rivalry? Cast your votes!
Red Sox rout Tigers with 8 HRs
A lot happened in last night's 20-4 Red Sox win over the Tigers. David Ortiz got his 2,000th career hit. The Red Sox blasted eight home runs. Shane Victorino dove into the stands to catch a ball, and then courteously returned a phone a fan had dropped on the field. Most importantly, the balance of power between the Red Sox and Tigers may have been irrevocably altered. We'll see how much of Boston's offensive outburst carries over when it heads to New York to take on a suddenly resurgent Yankees team.
Smith, Manuel named starters
Two AFC East teams will sport different looks at quarterback in Week 1 of the 2013 season. The Bills have officially named EJ Manuel their Week 1 starter, while the Jets will be going with Geno Smith in place of the injured Mark Sanchez. Both teams have struggled to find long-term solutions at quarterback, so there's a lot of pressure on both Manuel and Smith to at least be competent, much less excel.
Embattled quarterback Mark Sanchez will miss time with an injured shoulder, but given the Jets' moves lately, he might miss more than just a few games. The Jets signed veteran quarterback Brady Quinn as a backup for Geno Smith, who is expected to start in Week 1. If Smith excels -- or, really, if he plays with anything resembling competence -- it might be difficult for the team to justify starting Sanchez when he comes back. The presence of Quinn even could block Sanchez from a backup job, which could mean very bad things for Sanchez's NFL prospects.
Sanchez hadn't been outplayed by Geno Smith in the preseason, but he may have lost the Jets' quarterback battle by default.
