Tough choice for Texans at No. 1?

Much like the last time the Houston Texans had the No. 1 overall pick, it seems this year's selection will be a difficult one. Long it has been considered a choice between the top NFL draft talent (Jadeveon Clowney) and a home-state quarterback (Johnny Manziel), but in his latest mock (Insider) Todd McShay has Houston going with another signal caller: UCF's Blake Bortles (Manziel ended up No. 4 to the Cleveland Browns, one after Teddy Bridgewater to the Jacksonville Jaguars). Is this a good pick for the Texans? How will Manziel, a new Nike athlete, fare in the NFL?

Jaworski not high on Manziel

Johnny Manziel might be a candidate for the top pick in the draft, but ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski doesn't think the quarterback is worth nearly that high of a pick. Describing Manziel as a ''project,'' Jaworski said he wouldn't even take the QB in the first three rounds of the draft. Opinions vary on Manziel -- he is clearly an explosive playmaker and he excelled in college, but his lack of size and freewheeling style might not translate well to the NFL, which tends to turn impressive college quarterbacks into washouts. The Texans have the No. 1 pick, however, and are desperate for a replacement for Matt Schaub. Manziel might end up being that guy.

Clowney the No. 1 pick?

For all the debate about Jadeveon Clowney's NFL future, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay agree: He's the top prospect in this year's draft. He ran a 4.53 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine, further solidifying his status as the most talented player in the class. But should he go No. 1 overall? Will he? And what about that NFL future?

How important is the combine?

Prior to any actual workouts, the NFL combine commences with the players getting weighed and measured, which also renews our obsession over quarters and eighths of inches. We will surely hear much more before the draft begins on May 8 about how Johnny Manziel measured 1/4 inch short of 6 feet. We will also hear about fractions of seconds on 40 times, and there will most likely be leaked results of Wonderlic scores. The combine is just a part of the overall evaluation process, but it is definitely the most glamorous.

DE Michael Sam says he's gay

A landmark announcement occurred Sunday, as former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam -- an All-American and the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year -- said he is gay in interviews with ESPN and The New York Times. NBA free agent Jason Collins came out in April but has yet to sign with a team, meaning Sam, a projected middle-round draft pick, might become the first openly gay player on an active roster in any of the four major North American team sports. How will players respond? How will this affect his draft stock? When will such revelations be commonplace?
